An attractive city that's almost Mediterranean in appearance, CAJAMARCA , at more than 2700m above sea level, squats below high mountains in a neat valley. Despite the altitude, the city's climate is surprisingly pleasant, with daytime temperatures ranging from 6°C to 23°C; the rainy season is between the months of December and March. The city's stone-based architecture reflects the cold nights up here - charming as it all is, with elaborate stone filigree mansions, churches and old Baroque facades, most buildings are actually quite austere in appearance. Cajamarca is never overcrowded with tourists; in fact, it's unusual to see any foreign travellers outside of the main season, June to September. The narrow streets are, however, usually thronging with locals going to and from the market or busy at their daily toil. However, all this may change as a result of the discovery of Peru's largest gold mine at nearby Yanacocha, in the hills to the west of the city, and another at Cerro Negro, which are likely to make a significant difference to both the economy and the look and feel of the city over at least the next few years, and problems with associated immigration and river pollution have already begun to manifest themselves.
