Whether or not you are planning to venture to the eastern sites or the rainforest, Cajamarca is worth a visit. A sierra town, it is second only to Cusco in the grace of its architecture, the drama of its mountain scenery, and, above all, the friendliness of its people. From Trujillo there are two main routes, each exciting and spectacular. The speediest way is to head up the coast via Pacasmayo , then turn inland along a relatively new paved road which follows the wide Rio Jequetepeque valley, passing small settlements and terraced fields. Regular buses and colectivos from Trujillo do this route, completing the journey in about eight hours. A slower route (2 days at least) is by bus along the old road, currently in a poor state of repair, from Trujillo through Huamachuco and Cajabamba . Adventurous travellers may choose to make a loop, known as the Northern Circuit , going up by one route and returning by the other. The proud and historic city of Cajamarca remains relatively unaffected by the tourist trade, despite its intrinsic appeal as the place where Pizarro captured and eventually killed the Inca emperor, Atahualpa. It also makes a very dramatic starting point for visiting the ruins of Chachapoyas and the jungle regions around Tarapoto and Yurimaguas , although most people choose the faster and more frequented route from Chiclayo via Olmos and Jaen to access this region.
