Right on the Plaza de Armas, the Museo de Piedra , Bolivar 170 (daily 9am-1pm & 4.30-8pm; $5, includes a guided tour), contains a rather bizarre and controversial collection of engraved stones, assembled by Dr Javier Cabrera, a well-respected member of the community. Dr Cabrera claims that the stones are several thousand years old but few people believe this - some of the stones depict patently modern surgical techniques and, perhaps more critically, you can watch artisans turning out remarkably similar designs over on the pampa at Nazca. Nevertheless, the stones are remarkable pieces of art and one enthusiastic local guidebook claims that "dinosaur hunts are portrayed, suggesting that Ica may have supported the first culture on earth". The museum doors are often closed, so knock loudly.
