From the Museum of the Nation, walk for about five minutes or take a colectivo along Avenida Javier Prado to the junction with Avenida Aviacion, then take any bus or colectivo south to Avenida Angamos where you can catch the #72 microbus (yellow and red) or a Monterrico colectivo to the Centro Commercial shopping centre at the end of Angamos, in the well-to-do suburb of Monterrico. From here, Lima's Museo de Oro (daily noon-7pm; $5), Avenida Alonso de Molina 1100, is a short walk three blocks up Avenida Primavera, then two to the right along Santa Elena. Housed in a small fortress-like building set back in the shade of tall trees and owned by the high-society Mujica family, this museum is a must. Upstairs there are some fine tapestry displays, while at ground level it boasts a vast display of arms and uniforms , many of them incredible antiques which bring to life some of Peru's bloodier history. But it's the safe-rooms downstairs that contain the real gems. Divided into several sections, these basements are literally crammed with treasures and beautiful craft goods from pre-Columbian times. Most of the gold and silver jewellery is in the metalwork rooms, but more fascinating perhaps are the pre-Inca weapons and wooden staffs, or the astounding Nasca yellow-feathered poncho designed for a noble's child or child high-priest. One thing that generally causes a stir, too, is a skull enclosing a full set of pink quartz teeth - in the corner on the right as you enter the main room from the stairs. The Casa Ecologica , which pertains to the Universidad Catolica's Group for Assistance to the Rural Sector, has an interesting green exhibit of a house with wind, solar electric, solar thermal and solar cooking facilities set in an organic garden. Based in La Molina, beyond the Museo de Oro, you need to contact Miguel Hazdich in advance to visit (tel 460-2870, grupo@pucp.edu.pe, www.pucp.edu.pe/~grupo).
