In the east of the city lies one of Lima's most compelling museums. The Museo de la Nacion , Javier Prado Este 2465, in the suburb of San Borja (Tues-Sun 9am-6pm; $1, $3 extra for exhibitions; tel 476-9875 or 476-9897), is Lima's largest modern museum and contains permanent exhibitions covering most of the important aspects of Peruvian archeology, art and culture; there's also a cafeteria (daily 10am-6pm). Exhibits are displayed mainly in vast salons and include a range of traditional, regional peasant costumes from around the country and life-sized and miniature models depicting life in pre-Conquest times. The museum can be visited by taking a colectivo along Avenida Javier Prado east from Avenida Arequipa; after ten to fifteen minutes, you'll see the vast, concrete museum on the left.
