Very close to Carhuaz, a small river bridge brings the road to the village of MANCOS , where there's an unusually attractive plaza, with palm trees and a quaint but modern church with twin belfreys sitting under the glistening glacier of Huascaran. On the square there's accommodation at the Casa Alojamiento ($5-10), which offers clean, comfortable rooms and shared bathrooms, and there are several restaurants around and about. The village's main fiesta , August 12-16, is in honour of its patron, San Royal de Mancos., and the plaza becomes the focus of highly colourful religious processions and dancing and, later, bull-fighting.
