There are a multitude of excellent hikes in the Cordillera Blanca, almost all of which require acclimatization to the rarified mountain air, a certain degree of fitness, good camping equipment, all your food and good maps. Hiking in this region is a serious affair and you will need to be properly prepared. Bear in mind that for some of the hikes you may need guides and mules to help carry the equipment at this altitude. One of the most popular routes, the Llanganuco to Santa Cruz Loop , is a well-trodden trail offering spectacular scenery, some fine places to camp and a relatively easy walk that can be done in under a week even by inexperienced hikers. There are shorter walks, such as the trails around the Pitec Quebrada , within easy striking distance of Huaraz, and a number of other loops like the Llanganuco to Chancos trek. Experienced hikers could also tackle the circular Cordillera Huayhuash route. Detailed information on all these walks is available from the South American Explorers' Club in Lima, the Casa de Guias, the tourist office, or tour companies in Huaraz.
