The deep-blue Lake Paron (4185m), some 3km long and 700m wide, is sunk resplendently into a gigantic glacial cirque, hemmed in on three sides by some of the Cordillera Blanca's highest ice caps. There's a mountain refuge at the lake, run by the private company which operates the electricity plant at Huallanca; but there are only basic facilities available (toilet and hot water). It's always open for access, however, since two guards (one a radio operator) live there. Camping is possible at the refuge or on the east side of the lake, to which there's a clear path on the north bank. Buses and colectivo s (4.50am & 1pm; $1) from Caraz market travel up to Pueblo Paron, from where it's a 9km (3hr) hike up a further 900m in altitude to the lake. The last transport back from Pueblo Paron to Caraz is usally at 2.30pm. Taxis to the lake (about $10 per person) leave most days from the Plaza de Armas in Caraz.
