Nine kilometres across the Rio Santa from Caraz, set on the lower slopes of the Cordillera Negra, is the small settlement of HUATA , a typical rural village with regular truck connections from the market area in Caraz. The village is a good starting point for a number of easy walks , such as the eight-kilometre stroll up to the unassuming lakes of Yanacocha and Huaytacocha or, perhaps more interesting, north about 5km along a path up Cerro Muchanacoc to the small Inca ruins of Cantu .
