Some 24kms kilometres west of Huaraz, Punta Callan is reached in about two hours on the Casma bus from Avenida Raymondi 336. Ask the driver to drop you off at Callan, shortly before the village of Pira along the road to Casma; from here it's a twenty-minute walk up the path to the promontory. No other spot can quite match the scintillating views of the Cordillera Blanca, so save it for a really clear afternoon when you can see Huascaran's towering ice-cap at its best. Callan and Pira are surrounded by grazing land as pleasant as you could find for a picnic, and it's a relatively easy walk of a few hours back down the road to Huaraz. Passing trucks or buses will usually pick up anyone who waves them down en route. Go early in the day, to make sure you can get a bus on or back.
