The small town of POMABAMBA , 3000m up in dauntingly hilly countryside, is surrounded by little-known archeological remains which show common roots with Chavin de Huantar. Originally named Puma Bamba, the Valley or Plain of the Pumas, this may reveal direct links with the ancient Chavin cult of the feline deity. Today the town makes an excellent trekking base; from here you can connect with the Llanganuco to Santa Cruz Loop by following tracks southwest to either Colcabamba or Punta Union. Or, a hard day's hike above Pomabamba, you can walk up to the stone remains of Yaino , an immense fortress of megalithic rock. On a clear day you can just about make out this site from the Plaza de Armas in Pomabamba; it appears as a tiny rocky outcrop high on the distant horizon. The climb takes longer than you might imagine, but locals will point out shortcuts along the way. The area also abounds in little explored ruins ; try Pony Expeditions in Caraz for further information on these as well as maps, equipment and advice on trekking in this region.
