Some 8km north of Chavin is the lovely village of SAN MARCOS , a good base for mountain hiking. There are buses every hour from Chavin, or you can walk there in well under two hours. Accommodation is available at the Casa del Senor Luis Alfaro ($5-10), though it's a good idea to take a tent just in case his rooms are full. From San Marcos you can climb up another 300m in altitude to the smaller community of Carhuayoc , a hundred-year-old village whose population specialize in the production of fine textiles, mainly blankets and rugs (it's a 9hr round trip). About 35km from San Marcos, the town of Huari is a good base for a short trek to the scenic Lago Purhuay; it's only 8km from the town and a climb of some 400m, but it usually takes between five and six hours to get there and back. To continue on to Pomabamba from here, there are buses every other day, usually leaving Huari at 9pm ($5, a 7hr journey).
