Situated in the steeply walled valley of the Callejon de Huaylas , Huaraz is the focal point of inland Ancash. Although not one of Peru's most interesting towns, Huaraz has a lively atmosphere and makes an ideal springboard for exploring the surrounding mountains. It is dominated by the Cordillera Blanca , the highest tropical mountain range in the world, and Huascaran , Peru's highest peak. Only a day's bus ride from Lima or Trujillo, it's one of the best places to base yourself if you have any interest in hiking. The best weather in the region comes between May and September when the skies are nearly always blue and it rains very little. Between October and April, however, the skies are often cloudy and most afternoons you can expect some pretty heavy rains. Besides the mountain scenery, the region boasts spectacular ruins such as Chavin de Huantar , at the bottom end of the parallel valley the Callejon de Conchucos , the natural thermal baths at Monterrey and Chancos , and immense glacial lakes, like Lago Paron , the largest and surrounded by some snowcapped peaks, and the beautiful Llanganuco . Throughout the whole area, too, you come upon unusual and exotic flora like the enormous, tropical Puya Raymondi plants, and traditional mountain villages where unwritten legends are encapsulated only in ancient carved stones and the memories of the local peasant population.
