Overland from Huaraz to La Union and Huanuco

A dusty minor road to La Union turns off the main Huaraz to Lima road 7km beyond Catac, cutting through the Huascaran National Park past the Puya Raymondi and Pastoruri Glacier. From Catac , it's possible to hitch a ride in a truck to the rather cold, bleak and miserable mining settlement of Huansala (an hour or two up the road), but try not to get stuck here overnight, as there are no facilities for travellers. Huansala, you can either get one of the daily buses, or walk the 10km to Huallanca, where there are frequent trucks all the way to La Union; with luck you can do the whole trip in a day. However, most people will take the much easier route via Conococha and Chiquian (9hr). Empresa Rapido run buses from Huaraz daily ($3, a 4-5hr journey), from where they continue directly to La Union. If snow makes the pass difficult, the bus arrives at 8-10pm, making a stopover in La Union pretty inevitable.
