LA UNION , a small market town high up on a cold and bleak pampa, is a base for visiting the Inca ruins of Huanuco Viejo, a two- or three-hour hike away. If you do need a place to stay , there's the very basic, dirty Hostal Dos de Mayo (no phone; up to $5), or Hostal Turista (no phone; $5-10), which is slightly more salubrious but still has shared bathrooms. There are one or two restaurants around the market area, including the Restaurant El Danubo, for simple meals such as rice, chicken and stews. There are usually two or three buses a day to Huanuco from the market area in La Union, with the last one leaving around 11pm for the nine-hour ($5) journey. Alternatively, you can ride on top of one of the trucks which leave La Union market for Huanuco most mornings. There are no buses or public transport to Huanuco Viejo and the only way to get there is to walk, or take a taxi from the Plaza de Armas ($4-5).
