About 150km north of Huanuco, poised in the mountainous region above the higher reaches of the Rio Maranon, lies the small village of TANTAMAYO , with its nearby extensive ruins. In the village you can hire local guides (from $5 a day) to take you on the two- to three-hour hike to the scattered site, and excellent accommodation is offered at the Swiss-style tourist lodge known as the Hotel Turistica (no tel; $20-30), where English is spoken, and there are a couple of other more basic hostals.
