On the main road from Lima to the central jungle region of Pucallpa and the vast Rio Ucayali, the departmento of Huanuco offers the possibility of several fascinating excursions - the four-thousand-year-old Temple of Kotosh and the impressive ruins at Tantamayo , to name but two - as well as the option of penetrating the wilder parts of the Amazon Basin. Its capital, also called Huanuco , is a well-serviced market town and an ideal stopping point on the way to the jungle town of Tingo Maria and the coca-growing slopes at the upper end of the Rio Huallaga. The region is usually reached via the Central Highway and La Oroya, then north through Cerro de Pasco. However, for anyone already in and around Huaraz, or those willing to risk possible hardship and delays in return for magnificent scenery, there is a direct route over the Cordillera Blanca which takes you to La Union and the preserved Inca ruins of Huanuco Viejo , before continuing to the modern city.
