Five kilometres north of Barranca is the smaller town of PATAVILCA , where Bolivar planned his campaign to liberate Peru. The main Tarmacked road to Huaraz and the Cordillera Blanca leaves the Panamerican Highway here and heads up into the Andes, but the only facilities in the village are a basic cafe, the Restaurant Conejo, and a small museum (Mon-Sat 9am-5pm; $0.5), containing local archeological finds, including ceramics.
