Away to the north of Tikal, lost in a sea of jungle, are several other substantial ruins - unrestored and for the most part uncleared, but with their own unique atmosphere. Twenty-four kilometres north of Tikal, strung out by the side of a disused airstrip, are the village and ruins of UAXACTUN (pronounced "Wash-ak-t oon"). With a couple of places to stay, several comedores and a daily bus to Santa Elena, the village is an ideal jumping-off point for the more remote sites of El Zotz, Rio Azul and El Mirador , the bulk of whose temples are coated in an anarchic tangle of roots and shoots, with only the tallest roof combs visible. Dirt tracks go as far as Rio Azul and El Zotz, offering the perfect destinations if you're in search of adventure and want to see virtually untouched Maya sites.
