Forty-five kilometres northwest of Macas, reached by a ninety-minute bus ride small village of Nueve de Octubre provides an entry point to Parque Nacional Sangay ($10), spread over five thousand square kilometres spilling down Andes into the Amazon basin. The lower reaches, composed of dense forest home to jaguars, ocelots, howler monkeys, mountain tapir and numerous birdlife, is a pristine wilderness, for the most part completely undisturbed. Indepedendent hiking here is a challenging undertaking, only for fully self-sufficient hikers with an IGM map, a compass and good orienteering skills; an easier and more enjoyable option is to go on one of the guided three- to four-day hiking programmes offered by a couple of the tour operators in Macas , led by locals with an intimate knowledge of the paths used by fishermen and hunters. Alternatively, once the Guamote-Macas road has been completed , you'll be able to drive through the whole width of the park, from the Oriente to the sierra.
