The Comuna Cofan Dureno stands on the south bank of the Rio Aguarico opposite the colonist village of Dureno, about 25km east of Lago Agrio. The 300-strong community here has yuca and maize farms, and a small pocket of primary forest as part of their territory, but this is surrounded by colonized land. Their two very basic cabins are two-hours' walk from the village into the forest towards the Rio Pisuri. During your stay, you're likely to go on forest walks, fish on the river, and learn about medicinal plants and craft techniques. Contact them at least three days in advance; the best way is to approach a Cofan at the Lago Agrio Sunday market ; you'll need to speak reasonable Spanish. Costs are $30-35 per person per day depending on numbers, plus $1 for entrance. You'll need to provide all the essentials and carry everything yourself (on the two-hour hike as well). Several Transportes Putumayo or Petrolera buses a day make the sixty-minute journey to Dureno from Avenida Amazonas in Lago Agrio. Ask the driver for the Comuna Cofan Dureno, as the turning for the river crossing is before the colonist Dureno. The Cofan village is on the other side, and if you've made contact beforehand, your guide should be waiting for you with a dugout canoe.
