Although the region around Lago Agrio is one of the worst affected by oil and settler colonization, to the east lies one of the remotest and most beautiful sections of the Oriente, dominated by the huge Reserva Faunistica Cuyabeno . Many indigenous people live here, including Quichua, Cofan, Secoya, Siona and Shuar communities, who are struggling to defend their cultures and territory against encroachment from oil companies, settlers and unscrupulous tour operators. Some are turning to indigenous ecotourism programmes for economic and cultural survival. The main road east of Lago Agrio follows the Rio Aguarico to the settler village of Dureno skirting Cofan territory, before reaching Chiritza , from where some tour agencies take canoes into the southern section of the Cuyabeno reserve. The oil town of Tarapoa , over 70km from Lago, is where the road turns north and then west to the Colombian border at Puerto El Carmen de Putumayo , over 110km away; you cannot cross into Colombia here, but exploring this remote area is not recommended anyway, due to guerrilla activity .
