Barely 100m from the southeastern tip of Santiago, the volcanic cone of tiny SOMBRERO CHINO does indeed bear more than a passing resemblance to a Chinese hat. Boats moor in the blazing-blue channel between the islands, a terrific spot for some snorkelling where Galapagos penguins are occasionally seen. A trail here follows a white-coral beach, past a sea lion colony to a vantage point surrounded by scuttling Sally lightfoot crabs and marine iguanas , overlooking a cliff battered by the swell. The pockmarked lava is dashed with brighter blotches of lava cactus , while around the beach you'll find saltbush and colourful Sesuvium .
