Ten kilometres beyond El Progreso, Laguna El Junco is a caldera lake at about 650m surrounded by ferns, miconia, brambles and guava bushes, often shrouded in mist. The quiet is occasionally broken by the squawk of a moorhen , or splash of white-cheeked pintails and whimbrels . Fed by the mists and rain, it's one of the few freshwater lakes in the Galapagos, and as you follow the trail around the rim you may see feral mammals come to the banks to drink. When the clouds lift, there are some wonderful views over the island. Buses up this far are infrequent , but taxis will take you there and back for around $10. Ask the bus driver to drop you off at a path on the right, which leads steeply and quickly up to the lagoon. Bring sturdy shoes as it can be slippery: a waterproof jacket and something warm for the fresher air are also good ideas. Also check with the driver when the bus returns so you don't have to walk the 18km back to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. Several travel agencies make trips to the lagoon .
