Around 25km south of Tagus Cove, URBINA BAY shows one of the most dramatic results of tectonic activity. In 1954, a 1.5-square kilometre section of sea reef was shunted up out of the water, an uplift of almost 4m in places. Skeletons of fish, lobsters and turtles strewn about the rocks told of the violence of the movement; you'll see some sun-bleached brain corals, shells and urchins, several hundred metres from the water's edge. The trail here forms a long circuit, heading from a wet landing on a black beach inland to where land iguanas lurk beneath poison-apple trees, palo santo, Vallesia and cordia . In the rainy season, giant tortoises descend from Volcan Alcedo to the lowlands to lay eggs; feral goats have caused damage to the tortoises' habitat in this area. The trail then loops back along the shore, over the twisted black lava, home to marine iguanas and a few pairs of flightless cormorants .
