Geography and Geology
The thirteen large islands, defined as being over 10 square kilometres in area, and over forty small islands, islets and rocks (many of them unnamed) that make up the Galapagos Archipelago cluster around the equator some 960km west of mainland Ecuador. The total land area of the archipelago is 7882 square kilometres, well over half of which is taken up by Isabela, the largest island, consisting of six separate volcanoes joined together by lava. Isabela also has the highest point on the archipelago, Volcan Wolf at 1707m, bisected exactly by the equator line.
