Arrival and Information
There are two buses from San Jose via San Isidro to Jimenez (10hr), leaving the capital at 6am and noon and returning at 5am and 11am. A lancha for Jimenez leaves Golfito daily at 11.30am, returning at 6am, or you can fly in from San Jose or from Golfito. The Corcovado administration and information office (Oficina de Area de Conservacion Osa; Mon-Fri 8am-noon & 1-4pm; tel 735-5036, fax 735-5276), which faces the airstrip, is staffed by friendly rangers who can answer questions, arrange accommodation and meals at the park's puestos (if you haven't already done so - in most cases it's better to arrange this before you arrive). For other tourist information, try one of the town's various tour companies . The helpful Osa Tropical (tel 735-5062, fax 735-5043, osatropi@racsa.co.cr ) acts as the local Travelair and Sansa agent, has an international phone and fax service and can make accommodation reservations - it's on the main road 50m north of the gas station. Escondido Trex (tel & fax 735-5210, osatrex@racsa.co.cr ) offers a wide range of tours and has an office in the Restaurante Carolina . The tiny Banco Nacional changes travellers' cheques and dollars. The correo , opposite the soccer field, has public phones and Internet access, as does Cafe Net El Sol on the main drag. The town truck to Carate goes daily except Sundays in the dry season at about 6am, but you'd do best to confirm this locally. You could ask staff at El Tigre supermarket, its departure point. In the wet season it goes less often, about three days a week. The price is about US$5 per person one way; you can arrange to be dropped off and picked up if you're staying at any of the places between Jimenez and Carate - ask the driver. If you don't get a place on the truck, a number of local taxi drivers have 4WDs ; try Orlando Mesen (tel 735-5627; about US$60 return to Carate).
