Practicalities
The least expensive way of getting to La Selva from San Jose is to take the 7am Rio Frio/Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui bus (marked "Rio Frio"), which, if you ask, will drop you off at the entrance to the road leading to the station. Note, however, that it's a two-kilometre walk down the road from the junction. The OTS (tel 240-6696, fax 240-6783) also lays on a thrice-weekly bus (US$10) from its office in Curridabat, a suburb in the east of San Jose; though mainly reserved for researchers and students, it's worth asking if they can fit you in. Taxis make the four-kilometre trip from Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui for about US$5. If you want to stay at La Selva, you must book in advance, by calling the office number. The simple but comfortable accommodation (in San Jose tel 240-6696, fax 240-6783; in La Selva tel 740-1515, fax 740-1414; US$40-60) at La Selva isn't cheap, but proceeds go towards the maintenance of the station. Researchers and students with scientific bona fides stay for less (US$15-25). Rates include three meals a day, served in the communal dining hall. A day visit costs about US$20 (including lunch); again, you have to reserve in advance, whatever time of the year you come.
