The far north of the Zona Norte is an isolated region, in many ways culturally - as well as geographically - closer to Nicaragua than to the rest of the country. Most tourists come here to see Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Cano Negro , a vast wetlands area and - at 192km from San Jose - one of the most remote wildlife refuges in Costa Rica. You can visit Cano Negro on a day-trip from the capital or on an excursion from Fortuna or any of the larger hotels in the Zona Norte; getting there independently, as with everywhere in Costa Rica, is more complicated.
