Eating and Drinking
Perhaps because of its student population, Heredia is crawling with excellent cafes, patisseries, ice-cream joints and the best vegetarian and health-food restaurants outside San Jose. Nightlife is low-key, restricted to a few local salsa spots. If you're young or studently inclined, head for the four blocks immediately to the west of the university, which is where you'll find the best bars in Heredia. Azzura Italiana , southwest corner of the Parque Central. Upmarket cafe with superior Italian ice cream, excellent refrescos , fresh sandwiches and real cappuccino and espresso. El Bulevar , Av 4, C 5/7. Currently the in place for Heredia's student population, this lively bar is open to the street and does inexpensive beer-and- boca specials. Le Petit Paris , C 5, Av 2/4 (tel 262-2564). This French-owned oasis of calm has tables set out in a small garden and serves delicious French cuisine. The lunch menu changes daily, and there's live jazz on Wednesdays. Expect to pay around US$10-15 for a full meal. Closed Sun. The Second Cup , foyer of the Hotel America , C 0, Av 2/4. Posh cafe with cappuccino, iced coffee and breakfast, as well as a good-value lunchtime menu (US$3). The tables outside on the main street are great spots for people-watching.
