The blasted-out lunar landscape of PARQUE NACIONAL VOLCAN IRAZU (daily 8am-3.45pm; US$6) is dramatic, reaching a highest point of 3432m and giving fantastic views on clear days to the Atlantic coast. The inactive Diego de la Haya crater is a creepily impressive sight, its deep depression filled with a strange algae-green lake. Some 32km north of Cartago, the volcano makes for a long but scenic trip, especially early in the morning before the inevitable clouds roll in. Disappointingly, there is little actually to do in the park after you've seen the crater from the mirador and there are no official trails, though it's possible to clamber along the scraggly slopes of a few outcroppings and dip into grey-ash sand dunes.
