Practicalities
Sarchi is a spread-out place, divided into two halves. Large fabricas line the main road from Sarchi Sur , in effect a conglomeration of mueblerias , to the residential area of Sarchi Norte , which climbs the hill. There's just one small hotel , the Hotel Daniel Zamora (tel 454-4596; US$10-15), on a sidestreet opposite the soccer field in Sarchi Norte, which has clean rooms and hot water. For lunch or a snack, try Soda Donald beside the soccer field, which serves decent refrescos and ice cream, or La Finca restaurant, to the right of the Mercado de Artesania souvenir shop as you drive north out of town, which serves very good maize soup and grilled steak. Local buses from Alajuela run approximately every thirty minutes from 5am to 10pm. Buses back (via Grecia) can be hailed on the main road. From San Jose an express service (1hr-1hr 30min) runs from La Coca-Cola daily every thirty minutes from 5am to 10pm; the return schedule is the same. You could also take the bus to Naranjo from La Coca-Cola, every hour on the hour, and switch there for a local service to Sarchi - call the Tuan bus company for information. The Banco Nacional on the main road beyond the church changes dollars and cheques , as does a smaller branch in the Mercado de Artesania. If you need a taxi to ferry you back and forth between Sarchi Sur and Sarchi Norte, or to Alajeula or Zarcero, they can be called on 454-4028 or hailed on the street.
