First impressions of the student district of San Pedro , west of the city centre, can be offputting, with Avenida Central (also known here as Paseo de los Estudiantes) lined by gas stations, broken-up sidewalks, and dull malls as it passes through the area. Walk just a block away from the Paseo, however, and you'll find a lively combination of university student ghettos and elegant old residential houses, home to some of the city's best bars, restaurants and nightlife, catering to students, professors, residents and professionals. Buses to San Pedro from the middle of town stop opposite the small Parque Central , centred on a monument to John F. Kennedy. Walking north from the square, through three blocks of solid sodas, bars, restaurants and abandoned railway tracks, you come to the cool, leafy campus of the University of Costa Rica (UCR), founded in 1940 and now one of the finest universities in Central America, with a busy, egalitarian and stimulating atmosphere.
