Near El Pueblo, at the north end of Calle 4, is the Centro Costarricense de la Ciencia y la Cultura (Tues-Fri 8am-4pm, Sat & Sun 10am-4pm; US$5). Located in a former prison, this complex devotes most of its space to the mildly interesting Museo de los Ninos (Childrens' Museum), where Costa Rican kids can come to see interactive displays and learn about their country's history, culture and science. The complex also houses the Museo Historico Penitenciario (Penitentiary History Museum), which consists of a number of the original prison cells restored to their nineteenth- century condition, and some rather anodyne accounts of the country's penal history.
