Puerto Viejo has no tourist information office, but as with Cahuita, the village's tour operators can give you advice and maps. The most helpful operator is Puerto Viejo Tours (Tues-Sun 8am-12pm & 2pm-6pm; 25 & fax 750-0411, puertoviejotours@yahoo.com ) on the seafront, which has a wide range of tours, including rafting, snorkelling and bird-watching. They'll also change dollars and travellers' cheques, as will the nearby Comisaratio store. Terraventuras Tours (tel 750-0426, terraventuras@hotmail.com ) rent out snorkelling equipment at very reasonable rates, while the surf shop Thunder Love rents out surf and boogie boards and can organize surfing lessons. If you're interested in ecology, the proprietor of Cabinas Tropical , author and biologist Rolf Blancke, takes people out on excellent trips into the Gandoca rainforest (US$35 for a 12hr trip). The correo (Mon-Fri 7.30am-6pm, Sat 7.30am-12pm) is situated in the small commercial centre three blocks back from the seafront. For camera film and other essentials, head for El Buen Precio supermarket , which has two public phones in front of it (as does ATEC). The ATEC office on the main road (daily 8am-9pm; tel & fax 750-0191, www.greencoast.com/atec.htm ) has Internet access and an international telephone and fax service.
