Information
If you're coming to Cahuita from Puerto Viejo , be sure to pick up a copy of the free Costa Rican Caribbean Info Guide , which unfolds into maps of the local area and a directory of accommodation and businesses in both villages. The only sources of visitor information in the village itself are the tour companies: Mr Big J's (tel 755-0328), towards the Parque Nacional Cahuita puesto and beach, has a book exchange and laundry facilities. Cahuita Tours (tel 755-0000) has public phones where you can make international calls, while Turistica Cahuita sells the Tico Times . There's Internet access at Cabinas Palmar (evenings only). There are no banks in town - the nearest are in Bribri, 20km away, or Limon. Your best bet for changing money , travellers' cheques and obtaining cash advances on credit cards is the efficient cambio (7am-4pm) at Cabinas Safari ; Supermarket Vaz changes cash only. The small police station ( guardia rural ) is on the last beach-bound road at the north end of the village; the correo next door (theoretically Mon-Fri 7.30am-5pm) keeps erratic hours, to say the least.
