The Border and On Into Panama
Sixaola-Guabito is a small crossing that doesn't see much foreign traffic, and for the most part formalities are simple, but you should get here as early in the morning as possible. The Sixaola-Guabito border is open daily from 8am to 5pm Panama time (one hour ahead of Costa Rica). Tourists leaving Costa Rica need to buy a Red Cross exit stamp (US$2 from the pharmacy in Sixaola); citizens of some nationalities may require a tourist card to enter Panama (valid for 30 days); the Panamanian consulate in San Jose issues them, as does the San Jose office of Copa, the Panamanian airline. Immigration requirements often change; check with the Panamanian consulate. In Panama , there's nowhere decent to stay before you get to Bocas del Toro - leave time to look for a hotel once you're there, and be aware that bus connections can be tricky.
