Practicalities
Santa Rosa's entrance hut is 35km north of Liberia, signed from the Interamericana. After paying the park fee, pick up a map and proceed some 6km or so, taking the right fork to the administration centre (tel 666-5051, fax 666-5020), which also runs to Guanacaste and Rincon de la Vieja national parks. From here a rough road leads to the beaches; to drive these, even in the height of the dry season, you'll need a sturdy 4WD. The rangers discourage any driving at all beyond the main road; most people park their vehicle at the administration centre and walk. If you're walking down to the beach, a ranger or fellow tourist will probably give you a ride, but on no account set out without water - a couple of litres per person, at least, even on a short jaunt. The easy-to-carry bottles of water with plastic handles sold at the gas stations on the road outside Liberia are particularly convenient - stock up before you come. You can also buy drinks at the administration centre. Camping facilities at Santa Rosa are some of the best in the country. There are two sites, each costing US$2 per person, payable as you arrive at the administration centre. The shady La Casona campground has bathrooms and grill pits, while Playa Naranjo , on the beach (and only open outside the turtle-nesting season), has picnic tables and grill pits, and a ranger's hut with outhouses and showers plus, apparently, a boa constrictor in the roof. Wherever you camp, watch your fires (the area is a tinderbox in the dry season), take plastic bags for your food, do not leave anything edible in your tent (it will be stolen by scavenging coati) and, of course, carry plenty of water.
