Eating, Drinking and Nightlife
Just a few years ago all you could get to eat in Montezuma was fantastically fresh fish , practically straight off the hook, though nowadays this is complemented by tourist favourites like vegetarian pizza, granola, mango shakes and paella, not to mention more exotic dishes. Eating three meals a day will set you back a few colones, though: Montezuma's accommodation may still be moderately priced, but food is on the expensive side. If you're staying somewhere with a kitchen you can cut costs by grabbing food from Chico's store in the centre of the village. Nightlife in Montezuma centres around Chico's Bar , an interesting mix of local kids, who arrive packed in the back of pick-ups, and tourists guzzling from a surprisingly wide bar stock and shouting above the music. More retiring types can take in the very popular nightly video shows (in English) at the Sano Banano at 7.30pm; you have to spend at least US$6 in the restaurant to get in. Amor de Mar , at the hotel of the same name. Enjoy beautiful ocean-front views whilst sampling a range of light snacks, smoothies (made with homemade yoghurt) and superb, healthy breakfasts using delicious homebaked German bread. El Sano Banano , in the village. Excellent North-American-style breakfasts and filling lunch and dinner specials - the fillet of fish (US$6) makes a good evening meal - plus crepes, vegetarian pizzas and vegetarian canelloni with spinach; organic produce is used where possible. If you have nothing else, try the incredible smoothies made with fresh fruit and yoghurt. Panaderia , in the village. Good coffee, ice cream and lovely cakes - if you want to take lunch to the beach, try the takeaway avocado, vegetable and hummous sandwiches. Closed Sun. Playa de las Artistas , about 400m south of the village. Classy Italian-owned restaurant, with tables set romantically among the palm trees and nice touches like lampshades made out of coconut. The menu features exquisitely prepared Mediterranian cuisine with a local twist - the spaghetti with lobster and white wine sauce (US$11) is exquisite. Closed Sun.
