Southeast of Quepos

Southeast of Quepos , a seven-kilometre stretch of road winds over the surrounding hills, pitching up at the entrance to the Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio. This road is now the site of a tremendous number of hotels: the most exclusive - and expensive - are hidden away in the surrounding hills, reached by side roads, and the very best overlook Punta Catedral, or Cathedral Point, which juts out picturesquely into the Pacific. Though there are some reasonably affordable places near the park entrance, and the occasional low-season discount, prices are high compared to the rest of the country.

La Buena Nota souvenir shop, on the road to Manuel Antonio between the Hotel Karahe and Cabinas Piscis (tel 777-1002), functions as an information centre for the area, as well as selling camera film, foreign papers and magazines, and locally made hand-crafted clothing, including some featuring molas (designs from the Panamanian Kuna peoples). There's Internet access in the unlikely setting of a restored railway car - brought all the way from northern Chile - in front of La Cantina restaurant across from the Costa Verde hotel.

hotels we've listed are in the order you encounter them from Quepos . All are well signed from the road. More than anywhere else, the choice is partial, each one representing the best value in its price range. Taking a taxi from Quepos to any of the hotels on the road to the park there's a set fare of around US$6. If you're going back to Quepos by taxi, it's cheapest to flag one down on the road. Fares are per person, and the driver may pick up a number of people along the way.
