Tours and Talks
Whatever sort of walk you go on in Monteverde - or anywhere else in the country, for that matter - it's worth realizing that you are more likely to be looking at plants, smaller animals and insects rather than staring into the eyes of pumas or tapirs. Bearing this in mind, the reserve itself runs excellent guided walks . Walks start at 8am sharp (or at 7.30am and 8pm if demand is high), last three to four hours and cost US$15 (plus the US$10 entrance fee). Ask in your hotel or call the reserve office a day in advance on 645-5112 or 645-5122 to secure a place, since there's a maximum of just nine people - and make sure to arrive on time, too, or they'll set off without you. It might seem like a pricey tour, but the guides are informative and the experience supremely educational. Another highly recommended way to experience another side of the rainforest - though not for those who are put off by the dark or by creepy crawlies - is the night walk (US$13), which leaves at 7.30pm each evening - you don't have to book for this tour, but turn up at the reserve office by 7.15pm to buy a ticket. Ask too, about the occasional orchid walks , available only at certain times of the year. All walks end with a slide show , during which you'll see some of the creatures you encountered in the reserve and many you did not, including the Monteverde golden toad. If you can't or don't want to go on the official tours, there are a number of excellent local guides who can show you the reserve and the entire Monteverde area. Check at the visitor centre.
