should be able to get away with not booking. In the dry months you should also book a room ; in the wet season you can just turn up. Give yourself at least three days in the area; one to get up there, at least one to explore (two is better), and another to descend.

All the major operators offer tours to Monteverde from San Jose; their advantage is a better rate on the more comfortable hotels and transport, but otherwise you can see Monteverde just as well on your own.
