Avenida Paulista marks the southwestern boundary of downtown Sao Paulo, and beyond that are the Jardins , laid out in 1915 and styled after the British idea of the garden suburb. These exclusive residential neighbourhoods have long since taken over from the city centre as the location of most of the city's best restaurants and shopping streets, and many residents never stray from their luxurious ghettos - protected from Third World realities by high walls, complex alarm systems, guards and fierce dogs. At the northeastern edge of the Jardins suburb and falling mostly within it, the district of Cerqueira Cesar straddles both sides of Avenida Paulista and is dominated by a mixed bag of hotels, offices and apartment buildings interspersed with shops and restaurants geared towards the city's upper middle class.
