About 60km from Angra, is TARITUBA , a charming little fishing village, still relatively untouched by tourism. Any bus going along the coast will let you off at the side road that leads to the village, or there are buses several times a day from Parati, 35km further west. There's not much to the village - a pier along which fishing boats land their catches, a few barracas on the beach serving fried fish and cold drinks, and a pretty church - it's simply a place to relax in, away from the often brash commercialism of Angra and Parati. There are a couple of decent pousadas , but it can be difficult to get a room in high season or even to make telephone reservations. The most comfortable place is the Tarituba (tel 024/365-2401 or mobile 9991-1102; $35-50), which has large rooms with private verandas and hammocks overlooking the pool and beach beyond. Simple, but very friendly and right on the beach is the Pousada de Carminha (tel 024/371-1120; $20-35), with shared bathrooms. Bear in mind that here, as right along the coast, the borachudos and mosquitoes are murder, so bring plenty of insect repellent and mosquito coils with you.
