ITACURUCA , around 90km from Rio, is a tranquil hamlet that attracts wealthy yachting types. The attraction here is obvious: the village nestles between rolling hills and a malachite-coloured sea, its offshore islands - Jaguanum and Itacarucu, with their pleasant walks and beaches - easily reached by boat. Tours of the islands can be arranged with the tourist office at Praca da Igreja 130, in Itacuruca, or are operated direct from Rio (ask at Passamar Turismo, Rua Siqueira Campos 7; tel 021/233-8835). Both islands have luxury hotels , the Hotel Elias C (tel 021/680-7089; $70-90) and Hotel Pierre (tel 021/688-1560 or 253-4102; $70-90) on Itacurucu, and Hotel Jaguanum (tel 021/235-2893; $70-90) on the neighbouring island.
