Health matters For medical emergencies, English-speakers should try a private clinic such as Sorocaba Clinic, Rua Sorocaba 464, Botafogo (tel 021/286-0022); Centro Medico Ipanema, Rua Anibal Mendonca 135, Ipanema (tel 021/239-4647). Normally, they'll send an ambulance, but if they haven't got one, phone Clinic Saviour (tel 021/227-5099 or 227-6187) or Pullman (tel 021/236-1011 or 257-4132). Best bet for any non-emergency problems is the Rio Health Collective, Banco Nacional building (room 303), Av. das Americas 4430, Barra de Tijuca; a non-profit-making organization, its phone-in service (tel 021/3325-9300 ext. 44) is free, and provides names of qualified professionals who speak foreign languages. Alternatively, your consulate should have a list of professionals who speak an appropriate language. If you speak Portuguese, call Golden Cross - the national health insurance service - which operates a 24-hour referral service in Rio (tel 021/286-0044; outside Rio tel 021/3800-3070). Newspapers and magazines There are several kiosks where foreign-language newspapers are available, including ones on Rua Lauro Muller, Botafogo, at junctions along Avenida N.S. de Copacabana, Copacabana, on Rua Visconde de Piraja/Praca General Osorio, Ipanema, and along Avenida Rio Branco in Centro. The Herald Tribune and Miami Herald are the two most easily available English-language newspapers in Rio, and Time, Newsweek and the Economist are all readily available. The Jornal do Brasil and O Globo are Rio's two main newspapers, while the weekly news magazine Veja features a useful Veja Rio insert, listing and reviewing cultural events in the city. Police Emergency number tel 190. The beach areas have police posts located at regular intervals. The special Tourist Police are located at Avenida Afranio de Melo Franco (opposite the Teatro Casa Grande), Leblon (tel 021/511-5112, 511-5767 & 690-3560); they are very helpful, speak English and efficiently process reports of theft or other incidents. Post offices Correios are open Mon-Fri 8am-6pm, Sat 8am-noon. There's a Central de Informacoes at Av. Presidente Vargas 3077, Centro (tel 021/293-0159). Main post offices are at Rua Primeiro do Marco (corner of Rosario) in Centro; Av. N.S. de Copacabana 540 in Copacabana; Rua Visconde de Piraja 452, Ipanema; Av. Ataulfo de Paiva 822, Leblon. Public holidays In addition to the normal Brazilian public holidays, most things close in Rio on January 20 (Dia de Sao Sebastiao) and March 1 (Founding of the City).
