If you're not tired of beaches , you'll find more beautiful examples around the pretty colonial village of Barra de Sao Joao and Rio das Ostras, an hour or so up the coast. Near the latter, the iodized waters of the Lagoa da Coca Cola (yes, really) boast more medicinal qualities - everyone must be very healthy in this neck of the woods. If you want to stay round here, you'll find pousadas in both these places. The next town of any size is MACAE , on the edge of a large sugar-cane-producing region. Again, you'll find excellent beaches here, but the city is more industrial than what has gone before, and the arrival of offshore oil drilling seems unlikely to increase its attractions. From here the main road heads northeast, inland around the Lagoa Feia, to CAMPOS , on the River Paraiba some 50km before it flows into the sea. Again it's predominantly a sugar-cane-producing town, and its primarily agro-industrial nature makes it a less than attractive target, given the local alternatives.
