Following close on the heels of Bahia's Morro de Sao Paulo, PONTA NEGRA is one of the finest beaches in the Northeast. Running along a sweeping bay under steep sandy cliffs, the beach is magnificent, sheltered from Atlantic rollers, though still good for surfing. It's jam-packed with places to stay and often quite crowded; bars and restaurants range from trendy beach shacks to serious seafood restaurants, and there's a constant party atmosphere. On a relatively quiet part of the beach, just a few hundred metres from the main action, there's the Pousada La Luna ($20-35), a pleasant ramshackle place, and more or less next door is the Manary Praia Hotel, Rua Francisco Gurgel 9067 (tel & fax 084/219-2900, www.digi.com.br/manary; $35-50), which has some rooms with nice hammock balconies looking over the ocean and a large beach terrace. Also right on the beach, the Visual Praia, Rua Francisco Gurgel 9184 (tel & fax 084/219-3656; $50-70), is very comfortable, and large, with a big terrace and a children's play area. The Hotel Continental Plaza (tel 084/219-3346; $35-50) is a reasonably priced and comfortable mid-range option right at the busy part of Ponta Negra beach, where the road comes down to the beach. One of the cheapest and most basic options, also very busy, is the Hotel Costa Brasil next door at no. 36 (tel 084/236-2013; $10-20). The excellent-value Hotel Miramar, Av. Eng. Roberto Freire 3398 (tel 084/219-2131, fax 219-2350, www.miramarhotel.com.br; $35-50) is only a stone's throw from the beach and has great ocean views, two pools and comfortable rooms. There are several good places to eat : Don Vincenzo serves good pasta and seafood on a pleasant veranda overlooking the beach next to the large, pink Inga Praia Hotel. Close by, at Rua Erivan Franca 36, the Bar Rustico is a hectic 24-hour bar and restaurant, catering mainly to the surfing crowd. Perhaps the best of the places on the beachfront is the Bar Pirata, towards the southern end, just past the jangada boats; this bar-restaurant plays good rock and reggae music most of the time and has live pagode on Saturday nights.
