Eastern Minas Gerais is the least-visited part of the state and, travelling along the BR-262 highway leading to Espirito Santo state and the Atlantic, it seems very clear why. Although the mineiro hill country is pretty enough, the towns scattered along it are ugly industrial centres, steel mills belching fumes common even in the gaps between the towns. However, if you persevere right to the border with Espirito Santo, you enter an unrivalled part of Minas, where lush hills are covered with coffee bushes in terraced rows, like contour lines on a map. These hills gradually give way to the craggy, spectacular mountains of the Parque Nacional do Caparao and the highest peak in southern Brazil, the Pico da Bandeira . The best time to go is from June to August as at other times of year the mists and rain make it difficult to see the marvellous scenery.
