The shiny and mighty Rio Araguaia is the glory of Goias. Even though most of the river now falls within the state of Tocantins, the Goias section has hundreds of fine sandy beaches suitable for camping, and some quite well-established resorts, very popular with the residents of Goiania and other towns in Goias. Rich in fish, the Araguaia is particularly popular during the dry season from May to September when the river is not so high, and serious angling enthusiasts come from Sao Paulo and Goiania to compete. The gateway to the river is ARUANA , a small town served by only a few hotels, just over 380km northwest of Goiania. The best place to stay, and as comfortable as hotels come in this town, is the Pousada Acua, Rua Jose Eufrasio de Lima (tel & fax 062/376-1294; $35-50), which has a pool, bar and reasonable restaurant. The Recanto Sonhado Hotel, Avenida Altamiro Caio Pacheco (tel 062/376-1230, reservations tel 062/212-3955; $35-50), is also very good, and has a pool, © 2003 by Rough Guides Ltd. as trustee for its Authors. sauna and facilities for jet-skiing. At the same price but with less on offer (you should get a discount) is Hotel Araguaia, Praca Couto Magalhaes 53 (tel 062/376-1251; $35-50), also with a pool. Cheaper still, there's the Hotel Do Sesi (tel 062/376-1221; $10-20). You can arrange boat trips to go fishing or rent your own boat in Aruana, and it's also one of the main ports of access for the Ilha do Bananal. July is the busiest month when it can prove difficult even to get a room.
